Do 140 characters help or hurt education?

"Stigma and shame, not sexual orientation, spreads AIDS" tweets Elton John AIDS Foundation.

I think that social networking can be a vital player in helping bring an end to the pandemic. I think it can just as easily be strong a force AGAINST ending the pandemic, and I don't know that there is much middle ground.  I also think that some of the biggest culprits in working against ending the pandemic are the very forces that are purportedly working to end the...

More about lgbt health disparities

Yesterday, I posted about what I think is not the best use of funding: spending money studying something we already know (in that case, it was about HIV disparities in the black msm/bisexual community).  Today, I came across a report by Kaiser Family Foundation that was released...

$3.2 Million to tell us what we know already?

Here we go again.  Researchers are getting $3.2 million to explore why black gay men have such high rates of HIV.  According to this article, public health officials have long attributed the increased risk of HIV to high-risk behavior; the study researchers suggest that it may have to do more with lack of access to testing and medical care.

I have a hard time believing this is being studied.  Again.  ...

HIV/AIDS Orgs. Should Not Use National Enquirer-like Headlines

"Self-Testing could Lead to more infections" was the heading of the google-alert and the linking news article found at AIDSMap.com.  This was referencing a study coming out in in Sexually-Transmitted Diseases ...

Out of Nigeria: Ideology + Public Health = Wasteful Spending

In the past two days, there were two stories out of Nigeria.  The first, on January 13, was news that a local committee from the Nigerian state of Gombe was launching an initiative to provide HIV tests to 500,000 residents in clinic and non-clinic settings.  The second,...

"Divide Exists on HIV-testing" Radio Interview

Last week, I was interviewed for WDCB Radio (public radio from College of DuPage) for their annual World AIDS Day program.  The emphasis was why self-testing is ignored by HIV/AIDS organizations.  One of the questions asked was whether President Obama's statements that we could have an "AIDS-free generation" were accurate, and whether we are on the right track.  My take is that he is doing what he can from his...

"Can we halt the epidemic again?"

This is the question posed in a recent New Yorker article titled "What Young Gay Men Don't Know About AIDS."  (It is probably more to the point that it's not just gay men but much of society in general - we have short memories as a culture.)

The phrasing of this question itself is fundamentally flawed, and one of the reasons that so many people don...

Is there direct access to a confirmatory test?

I called Whitman-Walker this morning. This is one of the larger HIV/AIDS testing and health organizations in DC.  I called to inquire about whether a "client" of mine, who has tested positive on a self-administered rapid test, could go to the clinic for a confirmatory test.  First off, the auto-system to get to a real person is not easy.  I first tried the route of info for testing, but that loops back to the main recording, so I tried #5 (the Red Carpet) without having a clue...

Study: Counseling with HIV-testing is an Inefficient Use of Funds

A study just released indicates that counseling at-risk people using a rapid HIV-test does not alter behavior.  "Overall, these findings lend support for reconisdering the role of counseling as an essential adjunct to HIV-testing", according to Lisa Metsch, the author of the study that was done through Columbia University's...

“’Empowerment’ is knowing that one has options”

                              -Robert Fulghum

I first used the above quote when the organization I was working for developed a scholarship for high school youth impacted by HIV/AIDS.  Our simple message was that empowerment changes the narrative of our lives, moving us from victimization to responsibility, and knowing we have options facilitates that empowerment.

I was...
