US Launches Self-Testing Service in Vietnam
USAID is providing funding to launch self-testing services in Vietnam. This makes it now 16 countries that USAID has funded to include self-testing in national HIV-strategies. What is one country NOT on that list? The US. Despite the research that shows that presence of self-testing dramatically increases testing rates for groups that have been hard to reach (such as truckers in Kenya, and gay men in other parts of Africa), awareness of, promotion of and funding for this option remain largely off the table in the US. HIV-testing organizations STILL don't even mention it as an option on their websites.
"AIDS, Inc." continues to control the funding, the turf and the cultural rhetoric when it comes to testing in the US. It's time to do better.
